I’m home from band camp.
While I was away in the wilderness whining about the overabundance of nature (but secretly having a grand old time), my computer died. It died to the point that a certified Apple dealership declared the motherboard (whatever that is) dead and gone. It was a sad, sad time.
So today, after a day spent listened to a looooong concert and then driving the six hours home, I just rolled back into town. (I’m tired and covered in bug bites, if you must know.) For some reason, despite all logic and reason, I decide that I should just check to make sure my computer didn’t magically come back to life during the trip home.
Guess what? It did! My computer came back to life! Upon arrival in Buffalo, my previously unresponsive computer was all, “Oh. Hello there, Kate.” I guess it was just mostly dead.
Coming back to Buffalo after a trip away feels like coming home. That may seem obvious to a lot of you, but frankly, it took me a long time to feel this way about Buffalo. Over the last year and a half I’ve enjoyed reveling in that happy feeling of “Yay! I’m hoooooome” after being away.
I guess my computer feels the same way. Me and my retarded computer….we’re Buffalonians. Out in the wild we get testy.

Apples are smart. It must’ve known that you were back in civilization and came back to life. Tell your computer to stop being such a drama queen!
The motherboard (surprised he didn’t call it the logic board, I’d always thought that was the official Apple nomenclature) is the main piece into which everything else plugs. Basically, if it doesn’t work, neither does anything else. And it’s not cheap to replace either. Not that anything else in a laptop is either, but unless the thing’s under warranty, it’s usually buy a new laptop time, as opposed to some other parts that might fail but are worth replacing.
If it’s still under warranty, I’d see what the local Apple Store thinks of it. Hell, even if it’s not, if it costs nothing to have it looked at.

Mike, now that I think about it, he did say “logic board”, but when I blinked blankly at him he tried “motherboard”.
My computer is still under Apple Care coverage, so it would have been fully covered to have the logic board replaced. I have to say, this computer has been a nightmare. (It’s a first generation MacBook) In the two years I’ve had it I’ve had the following things totally replaced: the entire mouse mechanism, the hard drive, the ridiculously fragile casing on the inside of the computer, the disc drive, and now it looks like the “logic board” is a dud too. This is a lemon. The sad thing is, this is my first Apple after a lifetime of PCs and as far as how it operates, I LOVE it. I don’t think I could ever go back, but DAMN this computer is a piece of crap. It’s kind of appalling how everything breaks down, and then I head out to the Galleria Mall, attractive 20 somethings fuss over me and soothingly shush in my ear, they fix the problem for free, and I’m sent on my way. I mean, I can’t argue with their customer service, but DUDE SHOULDN’T MY COMPUTER JUST WORK?!
Oh my god, SQUIRREL!!!! Squirrel in the highest. My computer was totally broken (black screen) for several days last week and then on Friday, just as I was about to leave Sequoia, it magically came back to life. It’s been fine ever since. Maybe our computers are against cheesy, feel-good chamber music camps.
Kate, glad to hear I haven’t totally lost it with respect to Apples. :) Generally Macs do Just Work. We’ve got a boatload of them at work, and since I get to fix machines, I usually know if something’s gone wrong. Of course, most quality PCs do Just Work too nowadays, provided nobody’s done anything particularly stupid to them.
But like anything, sometimes you do get a lemon. Good luck with your Macbook, whether it turns out that this is a lemon, or another in a series of bad luck issues.
