The Hangover

Scene: A bedroom. Noonish.

Duuuuude, what the hell happened last night?

My head hurts.

What day is it? July 2nd? Oh man… (sits up in bed, blurry-eyed, hair all askew)…did we sign some dudes?

(Looks over to the right.) Who is this dude? (looks on floor next to bed) Why is there a Leino Flyers jersey on the floor?

(coughs a few times, clears throat, gently closes eyes, considers just going back to sleep)

(slowly opens eyes)

(Looks down at hand. Brings hand up near face.) Why am I wearing a wedding ring? (Looks back at Finnish guy.)

(gently closes eyes)

(slowly opens eyes)

The last thing I remember from last night is hearing that Darcy was on his way to Mississauga… (rubs eyes)… wait… did we get Richards?

Well, we didn’t go home with the best guy but we ended up with three others including two Europeans. Not bad.

Steve Montador, Tim Connolly and Chris Butler for Robyn Regehr, Christian Ehroff and Ville Leino. Not bad either.

I feel like it’s December 26th and I got a Rbk one piece stick instead of the Easton that I really wanted.

Got something useful, but it’s not the gift I was dreaming of leading up to 12/25.

He’s not Richards, but he’s also not Richard’s salary and cap hit. I wanted a #1 center too, but honestly never believed Richards was actually the right guy. Hopefully Darcy will pull off some magic in a trade, but personally, I’m relieved about Richards.

I AM a teensy bit uneasy about the former Flyer in our bed who we seemed to have married yesterday. But whatever. It’s all new and exciting.

Brian Burke: Tim, all we can afford is $4.75 million.

TC: Well, that’s not bad for two seasons.

BB: No, Tim, that’s $4.75 million PER season.

    TC: Well – snicker – I guess – chortle – I can – laugh – live with that.

BB: We’ll see you in TO. (Hangs up)

    TC: Bwaha. Bwahaha. Bwahahahahahahahaha!

Looks like Darcy reads TWC comments..so psyched we got Leino. Also relieved we didn’t put ourselves in cap hell for one of the most overrated players in the game by signing Richards. Now that TC is gone Darcy has no reason to go out and pick up a legit No.1 center.

Trade for Spezza (I’d put Eric Staal out there too but his cap hit is over 8M). We’d probably have to give up Luke Adam to get it done but I think I could live with that.

We know we need a top center – mostly so Leino doesn’t need to play above his level – so if Darcy completes the package in the next couple weeks this team will be sick. I suppose a stopgap could be Arnott, but hopefully we’ll just nail down a center in his prime now and be done with it.

shit, i was totally sober last night when i wrote my comment.. what i meant to say was darcy has no reason NOT to go out and get a legit no. 1 center now that connolly is gone.

I knew what you meant, trevor! Man, it’s such a relief that Connolly is gone.

I was a pretty ardent TC defender for years but it was definitely time for him to go. I still can’t believe he can somehow command almost 5M/year, so anyone (*cough* Toronto reporters *cough*) wondering why we dropped the coin we did for Leino should remember that.

I think Darcy’s in a precarious situation at the C position right now. Clearly they’re expecting Luke Adam to compete for a slot this year, but no way he could center the top line.

I still think Arnott could center the top line – he’s definitely capable of doing it if it means Roy can center the third line – so it would be tough to determine whether we would trade Adam or wait to see what another year brought us with him.
