Hard Hitting Analysis

We here at The Willful Caboose are committed to providing you with up-to-the-minute statistical analysis of the Buffalo Sabres. Our motto is “Numbers are for crunching”, and all of the TWC interns have been up all night crunching away. The stat is king!

Let’s get right to it.

Obviously, last night’s game was not what the Sabres were hoping for in response to the long, painful offseason, but, there were bright sides. First of all, Jaroslav Spacek is now on pace to score 82 goals and 82 assists, for a grand total of 164 points this season! I’m not sure anyone could have predicted this type of offensive production, but I think there are a number of Buffalo talk radio hosts who owe Jaro an apology. Drew Stafford is also projected to score 82 goals, which will shatter Teemu Selanne’s rookie record of 76. Darcy, I hope you’re paying attention. Stafford will be a RFA on July 1st 2009. Kevin Lowe is licking his chops right now! Slip him some roofies if you have to, but get Drew signed as soon as possible, or there will be hell to pay with the Buffalo fanbase.

Now for the bad news: Ryan Miller is on pace to give up 492 goals with a dreary record of 0-82, and Toni Lydman will finish the year as a minus 164. Ouch. Barring a devastating plague or multi-team plane crash, those numbers will not be good enough to get the Sabres into the playoffs come spring.

Sabres fans should definitely be panicking. The numbers don’t lie.

I had to break it to your hard-working analysts but I think Staffy has played too many games at the NHL level to qualify for any rookie awards/records. Bummer for him!

What was with our boys last night? Were they out late celebrating getting back together? Were they distracted by the shiny A’s on their chests? Were they upset that we, their biggest fans, weren’t in attendance? Did Toni here that you weren’t even watching in real-time? Hey, guys, tonight look out for those forwards behind you!

WHat?! I HATE it when guys don’t get a real rookie season! This is an outrage.

Kate, isn’t it though? Derek had the same problem a couple of years ago. He had a great season but had played up enough over the previous season that he’d lost his rookie status.

Serenity now…..positive in, negative out, positive in, negative out……*wipes a tear*

82 games in the season, guys. If we went by the records after two games, I’d be celebrating the Wild’s undefeated year and inevitable hoisting of the Cup! As it is, my team’s 2-0, and I can’t stop thinking that they really don’t look all that strong…
