I had no idea how close this tragedy is for some of the Sabres as reported in today’s Ottawa Sun.

Making the game just that much harder. wow.

When unthinkable tragedy occurs, you hear people use the word “meaningless” when it pertains to sports (and understandably so). But watching the game last night and seeing the standing ovation given to the team after they tied the game, it really gave it a different meaning. Sure, sports can act as an escape but I think for most people it’s more of a rallying point. The ovation was less about the score or the standings and more about a community, and its favorite team, showing its resiliency. Last night our great town morned the past and embraced the living at the same time. There is not many other outlets that allow you to do that. Couldn’t that make sports even more meaningful in a time of crisis?
